Default Baby In Pushchair Rolls In Front Of Train

A baby in Australia has had a remarkable escape after rolling in his pram off a railway station platform into the path of an oncoming train.

The 15-month-old child, who was with his grandmother at the time, suffered only cuts and grazes from the fall, even though the train pushed the pram a short distance along the tracks.

Railway staff praised the driver for reacting quickly and hitting the brakes.

It's the second miraculous escape at a Melbourne railway station within a year.

Last October Shweta Verma watched in horror as her son Saurish rolled away from her and was hit by a train - his pram was pushed 30 metres up the track before coming to a halt.

But despite what looked a certain fatality, the baby escaped unhurt.

The latest accident happened at Tooronga station, where the platforms slope slightly towards the tracks to help with drainage.

The child was pulled out from under the train by the driver then taken by paramedics to the Royal Children's Hospital, where he was met by his shocked mother.

Ambulance spokesman Paul Bentley said the child's grandmother was left severely shaken.

"It appears the pram just rolled," he added.

The design has now been banned, and most other stations have been altered to make them level.

Paramedic Kate Jessop told the Melbourne Age newspaper: "It's just the most miraculous circumstances that he is as uninjured as he is. It is absolutely amazing he isn't more injured.

"I've spoken to the child's grandma now and all she recalls is seeing the pram on the platform and then next time she turned around and she saw it on the tracks.

"She has had an incredible fright. I was assuming the worst and had those awful pictures in my head of a child underneath a train."

It could have been twice as deadly - the pram was a double buggy, but the baby's three-year-old brother was standing beside it, rather than sitting in it.
